Summary

This study interprets the violent sensibility of the New Tendency Novel as ‘proletarian grotesque’ and analyzes its political unconscious. The representation of poverty in the novels simultaneously depicts the reality and a transcendental fantasy of colonial Chosun, and the catastrophic ending is linked to utopian desires. This ‘catastrophic imagination’ is related to the impulse for an alternative system.
