This study examines the controversies surrounding literal and idiomatic translation in legal translation and seeks ways to improve the quality of Korean statutory translation. An analysis of Korean-English statutory translation by the Korea Legislation Research Institute reveals a prevalence of literal translation despite the aim of accurate and natural translation comprehensible to native English speakers. The paper proposes legal translation strategies based on a recipient-oriented approach and calls for further research on legal translation strategies and training.
