Summary

This study explores the Cold War subjectivity in South Korea by analyzing Cho T’aegwŏn’s autobiography, *A Butterfly in the Buddhist Monk’s Robe*. Cho conceals his socialist activities in his autobiography and reconstructs his identity as a centrist with cosmopolitan views, opposing both the conservative government and North Korean communists. The paper analyzes Cho’s autobiography and the Bertsch Papers to shed light on the cosmopolitan and third-party subjectivity of Korean centrists during the early Cold War.
