This article examines the achievements and limitations of modern Korean literature studies based on subaltern theory and suggests directions for its development. The concept of ‘subaltern’ has become a key term in modern Korean literature studies, but it suffers from a lack of methodological tension and insufficient theoretical consideration of the possibilities of representation. Nevertheless, the concept of subaltern has led to the discovery of new literary subjects and methods of reading, and expanded the boundaries of literature through research on female subalterns.
