Summary

This study empirically analyzed the difficulties and causes of ESG communication perceived by corporate managers as ESG reporting in the media increased, using grounded theory. The analysis revealed that corporate managers experience difficulties in external communication and internal consensus-building regarding ESG activities, influenced by negative media engagement and confusion between CSR and ESG concepts. These perceptions lead to fear of ESG washing and intention for passive ESG communication.
