Summary

Long terminal repeats (LTRs) of human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) containing Z-DNA structures can serve as alternative promoters for human functional genes. The study demonstrates that LTR elements containing Z-DNA regulate the expression of the GSDML gene, contributing to a better understanding of gene function in relation to various human diseases.
