Summary

This study systematically reviewed the literature to examine how meritocracy was embedded in formal schooling through the college entrance system. The analysis revealed that the concept of meritocracy was defined differently across studies, was associated with capitalism and neoliberalism, and that the college entrance system acted as a factor intensifying meritocracy. Furthermore, the study pointed out that meritocracy is an ideology that overlooks social inequality and suggested that future formal schooling should focus on abilities that embrace diversity and contribute to society as a whole.
