Summary

In the early 1900s, the perception of the mentally ill was dominated by vigilance and fear, depicted as objects of isolation in newspaper articles and novels. From the 1910s, changes emerged with the promotion of medical institutions, portraying patients as underdogs and emphasizing compassion, but the stigmatizing gaze remained prevalent. While these changes can be interpreted as a means to legitimize colonial rule, it is noteworthy that the mentally ill began to be viewed as objects of sympathy.
