이 강좌는 한 언어에 있어서 단어들이 실현되는 여러 형태들에 대한 연구를 목표로 한다. 형태론이란 단어의 구조를 연구하는 분야이므로, 형태론의 기본 단위인 형태소의 개념에서 출발하여, 이 형태소들이 결합하여 새로운 단어를 만드는 합성법과 파생법, 단어들의 어형이 변화하여 문법적 의미를 나타내는 곡용과 활용의 개념을 습득하고, 또한 이러한 현상들이 실제 자연언어에서 어떻게 나타나는가를 살펴 본다. 또한 형태론이 음운론이나 통사론과 맺는 관련성도 함께 살펴 본다.

이 강좌의 목적은 단어들의 구조와 형식, 그리고 부류의 연구와 분석에 있다. 따라서 그 결과가 새로운 단어를 만들어 내는 과정인 합성법과 파생법의 현상이 개별어에서 어떻게 나타나며 어떻게 체계화될 수 있는가가 심도있게 논의된다. 또한 한 단어의 어형이 바뀌는 곡용과 활용현상이 개별어에서 나타나는 양상 및 체계화 방법도 다루어지며, 그 과정에서 나타나는 문법형태소들의 의미와 의미와 범주도 연구된다. 최근의 문법이론에서 형태론이 음운론이나 통사론과 맺는 관계에 대한 탐구도 함께 한다.

단어들의 결합에 의한 문장이나 구 절의 기능 및 구조를 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이 강좌는 Chomsky를 중심으로 발전하고 있는 변형생성문법의 여러 이론들을 소개하고, 또한 여러 이론의 변화 배경 및 과정을 검토 비판한다. 최근에 와서는 통사론을 중심으로 문법을 기술하려는 주장이 강해지고 있는데, 이러한 여러 이론들의 특징과 장단점을 포괄적으로 살펴 본다. 또한 종래의 형태론에서 다루어 온 문제들을 통사론에서 어떻게 다루는지, 그리고 의미론과의 관계는 어떠한지를 함께 탐구한다.

말을 사용하는 유기체로서의 인간의 심리적인 면과 관련시켜서 언어행위를 파악하는 연구분야를 다룬다. 현대 언어이론이 내세우는 언어습득과 언어능력에 관한 가설들이 지각, 기억, 지능, 동기 등에 비추어 실제적 기반을 가진 것인지의 여부를 설명하려는 연구 분야도 다루어진다. 특정 언어에서 표현 양식이나 이해 양식과 그 언어의 구조나 원주민 문화 사이에 상호 어떤 규정이 있을 수 있는가의 문제도 포함된다. 또한 인지과학적 설명 방법을 도입하여 언어지식을 새롭게 분석하는 경향도 소개·평가한다.
