This study cognitively analyzes the story of Cook Ting from Zhuangzi to elucidate the cognitive features inherent in Zhuangzi’s self-cultivation. ‘Shen’ is ‘cognitive spontaneity’ resulting from the blending of hot and cold cognition, arguing that it is created through experience rather than being a priori. Cook Ting, through self-cultivation, perceives the ox through ‘shen’ and acquires ‘artificial hot cognition,’ engaging in a cognitive process of finding equilibrium according to the situation.
