Summary

This study investigated the toxic mechanisms of the harmful algal bloom, Alexandrium pacificum, which poses a threat to green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) farming in the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand. In vitro bioassays on sperm, hemocytes, and a marine diatom revealed significant sperm mortality upon exposure to A. pacificum cells or fragments, and increased mortality of hemocytes and diatoms in cell-free treatments containing paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs). These findings highlight the diverse toxic mechanisms of A. pacificum on co-occurring species in the environment.
